⚡ Quick Summary
The 2026 Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group take place in Bangkok, Thailand, from Monday, October 12 to Sunday, October 18, 2026. The main ministerial moments are listed for October 15 (Development Committee), October 16 (Plenary) and October 17 (IMFC Plenary). October 14 is a seminar and briefing day. Research cutoff: October 7, 2026. Nothing below has happened yet, and no outcome is predicted.
If you want one reason to follow the first half of next week's global economic news, it is this meeting. Finance ministers, central bank governors and officials from member countries gather every year to review the world economy, and this year the host is Thailand. This article explains what the meetings are, what the official schedules confirm for October 14 and the days around it, and what remains unannounced.
We wrote it a week ahead, so it is a guide to the programme and not a report on what was decided.
What the Annual Meetings Are
The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group were created at the Bretton Woods conference in 1944. Each year their governing bodies meet together for the Annual Meetings. Governors, usually finance ministers or central bank heads, review the global economy, lending and policy priorities.
Alongside the formal committees sit hundreds of seminars, press briefings and side events. Many of these are open discussions, not decision-making sessions, and it helps to keep the two apart when reading headlines.
Dates and Venue
The IMF's page gives the dates as Monday, October 12 through Sunday, October 18, 2026, in Bangkok. The IMF says Thailand last hosted the Annual Meetings in 1991. The World Bank's overview page gives the same dates but labels October 18 a Saturday. October 18, 2026 is a Sunday, so we follow the IMF's weekday and treat the World Bank label as a typo.
Neither page states a single formal theme. The IMF describes the event as highlighting Thailand's role as a regional and global convening hub. The World Bank programme leans on jobs, with two flagship sessions titled "Small AI, Big Jobs" and "Mobilizing Private Capital for Jobs".

The schedule did not show a venue for most sessions, and the page carries no "last updated" date, so check it again before the day.
The Fiscal Monitor Briefing
The Fiscal Monitor is the IMF's report on public finances. Briefings on it accompany the Annual Meetings, and the October 14 press briefing is the one to watch for government debt and deficit commentary. We have not seen the report, so we do not describe its findings.
Why the Meetings Matter, Including for India
The meetings are where member governments set the tone on debt, lending, inflation and development finance. For readers in India, the practical interest is indirect: global growth forecasts, development lending and discussion of cross-border payments and fraud all shape the environment Indian businesses and banks work in. Our explainer on the world's most powerful economies and countries gives wider context, and the new UPI merchant charges show how payments policy is moving at home.
We have not confirmed which Indian ministers or officials will attend. The published schedules do not list delegations, so we do not name any.
What Is Not Confirmed
- Attendees and speeches: no full list of ministers or governors is published in the pages we read.
- Outcomes: the IMFC and Development Committee usually issue statements or a chair's summary, but their content is unknown until they are released.
- Changes: sessions can move, so the live schedule on the IMF site is the authority.
Conclusion
The Bangkok Annual Meetings run from October 12 to 18, with October 14 given to seminars and briefings and the ministerial decisions grouped on October 15 to 17.
