⚡ Quick Summary
Wednesday, October 14, 2026 is the anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar's conversion to Buddhism at Nagpur in 1956 and of the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is also World Standards Day, the fourth day of Navratri in the calendar used by our Navratri guide, a day of sessions at the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, and the date of the 4th T20I between India and West Indies in Hyderabad. Research cutoff: October 7, 2026. Everything dated after that is a schedule, not a result.
This is a preview, written a week ahead. It answers one question: what makes October 14, 2026 worth knowing about, and what should you check before the day arrives? Nothing below has happened yet unless it is clearly labelled as history.
Some items fall exactly on the 14th. Others sit a few days either side, and each one carries its own date so you can tell them apart. The sections run from history to festivals, current affairs, sport and international meetings.

On This Day in History: October 14
Several well-documented events share this calendar date. We have kept to the ones with real consequences rather than a long list.
1066: The Battle of Hastings
On October 14, 1066, Norman forces under William of Normandy defeated the English army near Hastings, beginning the Norman conquest of England. The date is one of the best-known in English history. The anniversary in 2026 is the 960th.
1947: Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier
On October 14, 1947, US Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager flew the Bell X-1 at about Mach 1.05 in level flight over Muroc Army Air Field in California. It was the first widely recognised supersonic flight by a piloted aircraft, and it opened the way for later high-speed aviation. This marks its 79th anniversary.
1956: Dr B. R. Ambedkar embraces Buddhism
For readers in India, this is the most significant anniversary on the date. On October 14, 1956, Dr B. R. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism at Deekshabhoomi in Nagpur, together with a very large gathering of followers. He administered the Three Refuges and 22 vows to the new converts.
Reported numbers vary by source. Wikipedia's page on the observance gives about 380,000 people on October 14 and about 220,000 more the next day, while its date page rounds the first day closer to 385,000. We therefore say "hundreds of thousands" rather than quote one figure as exact.
The anniversary is observed as Dhammachakra Pravartan Din (see our full explainer). Its timing needs care. The Hitavada, a Nagpur newspaper, describes the 1956 event as taking place "on Ashoka Vijayadashami", and the Deekshabhoomi programme follows the festival calendar rather than a fixed Gregorian date. In 2025 the main day was October 2. In 2026 Vijayadashami is on October 20, according to our Navratri 2026 guide, so the largest gathering at Deekshabhoomi is likely to fall closer to that date than to the 14th. That is an inference from the pattern, not an announcement. Confirm the programme with the organising committee before travelling.
1964: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Nobel Peace Prize
Wikipedia's October 14 entry lists 1964 as the year Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. The award was announced that October; the formal ceremony came later in the year.
Festivals and Observances on or Around October 14, 2026
World Standards Day, October 14
World Standards Day is held each year on October 14. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) says it is celebrated by the members of the IEC, ISO and ITU as a tribute to the thousands of experts who develop voluntary international standards. ISO's page does not state a 2026 theme, and we did not find one elsewhere, so we do not give one. It is an international awareness day, not a public holiday.
Navratri continues
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday, October 11. In the calendar published in our Navratri guide, October 14 is the fourth day, Chaturthi, associated with the form of Kushmanda. Day-wise colours differ between published lists, so we do not state one. Durga Puja begins on October 16 and Dussehra falls on October 20.
Dates for tithi-based festivals can differ between panchangs and regions, and a tithi may span two calendar days. Check your local temple or panchang for the exact day. Navratri is a religious observance; bank and school closures are set separately by each state, which our October 2026 bank holiday list covers.
Just before and after
- October 11: International Day of the Girl Child, also the start of Navratri.
- October 13: the UN's International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The UN page did not show a 2026 theme when we checked.
- October 16: World Food Day. FAO gives the 2026 theme as "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."
Current Affairs to Watch as October 14 Approaches
The Nobel announcements finish just before the date. Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace are announced between October 5 and 9. The Economic Sciences prize follows on Monday, October 12, at 11:45 CEST at the earliest, which is about 3:15 PM in India. The announcement will be public two days before the 14th, so by then it will be news rather than a forecast.
UPI merchant charges start the day after. NPCI's new MDR framework is due to begin on October 15, 2026, according to our explainer on UPI MDR charges. Readers who use UPI for business payments should read it before the 14th, and check NPCI notices for any change.
We did not find other confirmed, date-specific national announcements for October 14 itself. We would rather say so than pad the list.
Upcoming Sporting Events
India vs West Indies, 4th T20I, Hyderabad
The fourth of five T20Is is listed for Wednesday, October 14 in Hyderabad. The venue is given as Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in a schedule compiled on Wikipedia, and Telangana Today's report on the squad announcement gives the city and date. Our earlier squad and schedule report on the BCCI announcement gave a 7:00 PM IST start for the series, but we could not confirm the time for this match on an official page. A ticket listing for the third T20I in Indore on October 11 confirms the same 7:00 PM pattern for that game.
We have not stated the series score, because the series was still under way at the research cutoff and any score would be out of date within days. Check the BCCI or ESPNcricinfo for the latest.
Other cricket in the window
- Women's ODI, Australia vs Bangladesh: a match is listed for October 14 at Allan Border Field, Brisbane.
- India women vs Zimbabwe: three T20Is are listed from October 16 to 20 in Raipur, then three ODIs from October 23 to 28 in Vadodara.
- New Zealand vs India: the men's tour is listed with T20Is from October 22 and ODIs from November 4 to 13. These dates are from a secondary source and should be confirmed with the BCCI.
FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup
The 2026 edition is hosted by Morocco from October 17 to November 7, with matches in Rabat and Salé. No matches fall on October 14, and India is not among the 24 qualified teams. It is useful context for readers searching for "World Cup" this month, but it is not part of October 14.
Scheduled Global Meetings and Political Events
IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, Bangkok
The 2026 Annual Meetings run from October 12 to 18 in Bangkok, Thailand. The IMF and World Bank pages both give these dates, though the World Bank page labels October 18 a Saturday when it is a Sunday, so we rely on the IMF's weekday. Key sessions: the Development Committee on Thursday, October 15, the Annual Meetings Plenary on Friday, October 16, and the IMFC Plenary on Saturday, October 17.
October 14 is a working-sessions day. Our full IMF and World Bank meetings guide has the detail. The IMF schedule (all times Bangkok, which is 1.5 hours behind India) lists:
- 8:30 AM (7:00 AM IST): "ASEAN in a Changing Global Landscape".
- 9:00 AM: a press briefing on the Fiscal Monitor.
- 12:30 PM (11:00 AM IST): the launch of the Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud-Resilient Financial Services.
- 4:30 PM (3:00 PM IST): a New Economy Forum session, "Rethinking Taxation for the AI Era".
The World Bank lists "Mobilizing Private Capital for Jobs" for the same day. These are seminars and briefings. The formal policy decisions come on October 15 to 17. We have not listed which ministers will attend, because the published schedule does not confirm it, and we make no prediction about outcomes.
What to Check Before October 14
- Cricket: the toss time, team news and venue arrangements on the BCCI or the host association's channels.
- Navratri and Durga Puja: your local panchang for the day's tithi and any fasting rules.
- Dhammachakra Pravartan Din: the Deekshabhoomi committee's 2026 programme and dates.
- Closures: your state's official holiday list, since observances are not the same as holidays.
- IMF-World Bank meetings: the live schedule on the IMF site, which can change.
- UPI: NPCI circulars before the October 15 start.
Frequently Asked Questions
What day of the week is October 14, 2026?
Wednesday. It is exactly seven days after October 7, 2026.
Is October 14 a public holiday in India?
We found no all-India public holiday on this date. Navratri and other observances are not automatically holidays, and state lists differ.
Why do some sources say Dhammachakra Pravartan Din is on October 14 and others a different day?
The 1956 conversion took place on October 14, which is why some mark that Gregorian date. The Deekshabhoomi programme has followed Ashoka Vijayadashami, which moves each year, as the 2025 dates show.
Is the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup on October 14?
No. The tournament opens on October 17 in Morocco.
Conclusion
October 14, 2026 brings together a deep historical anniversary in Ambedkar's conversion, a standards day with a quiet but practical purpose, the middle of Navratri, an important economic meeting in Bangkok and a T20I in Hyderabad. The sensible approach is to treat the date as a hub and confirm each local detail nearby.
Your next step is to read the Navratri 2026 calendar for the festival dates and the India squad and schedule report for the cricket.
