On This Day in History: October 15
Many events share this calendar date. We have kept to those with real consequences, and to the two with the strongest Indian connection first.
1932: Tata Airlines flies its first mail
On October 15, 1932, J. R. D. Tata took off in a de Havilland Puss Moth from Drigh Road airport in Karachi at 6:30 AM, carrying mail. According to the Tata Group's heritage account, he refuelled at Ahmedabad and landed in Bombay at 1:50 PM. Nevill Vintcent then flew a second Puss Moth from Bombay about twenty minutes later, carrying mail for Madras and Bellary.
Wikipedia dates the start of Tata Airlines, later Air India, to this flight, and some summaries credit Tata with the whole route to Madras. The Tata account is more specific, and it splits the journey between the two pilots, so we follow it. The airline became Air India on July 29, 1946, and returned to the Tata Group on January 27, 2022, according to Wikipedia. This is the 94th anniversary.
1931: Birth of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, in what was then the Madras Presidency. He went on to lead the satellite launch vehicle project at ISRO, run the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, serve as Director General of DRDO from 1992 to 1999, and become the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1997 and died on July 27, 2015. This is his 95th birth anniversary. Our separate explainer covers the claim that the day is a United Nations "World Students' Day": read why the UN says it is not.

Festivals and Observances on or Around October 15, 2026
Navratri, fifth day
Sharad Navratri 2026 began on Sunday, October 11. In the calendar in our Navratri 2026 guide, Thursday, October 15 is Panchami, associated with the form of Skandamata and called Lalita Panchami. Durga Puja begins on October 16 and Dussehra falls on October 20. A tithi can span two civil days, and different panchangs may differ, so check a local temple or your own panchang. Navratri is a religious observance. School and bank closures are set separately by each state.
International Day of Rural Women
The United Nations lists October 15 as the International Day of Rural Women. 2026 is also the International Year of the Woman Farmer. Our guide to the Day of Rural Women and the Year of the Woman Farmer explains the background and what the UN does and does not say about this year's theme.
Global Handwashing Day
Global Handwashing Day is held every October 15. The Global Handwashing Partnership, which runs it, describes it as a global advocacy day to raise awareness of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent disease. Its page presents a multi-year theme, "Be a Handwashing Hero!", and names no theme specific to 2026. It is an awareness day, not a public holiday.
White Cane Safety Day and World Students' Day
Wikipedia's October 15 page also lists White Cane Safety Day. We have not found a primary source for a 2026 programme, so we mention it only as a recognised observance. "World Students' Day" is widely observed in India on Kalam's birthday, but it is not a UN day, as our explainer shows.
Just before and after
- October 11: International Day of the Girl Child.
- October 14: the anniversary of Ambedkar's conversion, covered in our October 14 preview.
- October 16: World Food Day, with FAO's 2026 theme "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow."
Current Affairs to Watch on October 15
UPI merchant fees start
NPCI's revised Merchant Discount Rate framework is due to take effect on October 15, 2026, according to our UPI MDR explainer. That article reports that a 0.4% fee applies to selected person-to-merchant payments above ₹2,000, capped at ₹300, that customers pay nothing and that small merchants stay exempt. We have not re-verified those figures for this preview. Read the explainer and NPCI's latest circular before relying on any rate.
Development Committee in Bangkok
The World Bank's Annual Meetings page lists a Development Committee Ministerial Lunch and a Development Committee Meeting for Thursday, October 15. It gives no times, and the IMF's main page does not list that date. The 2026 Annual Meetings run from October 12 to 18. Our Annual Meetings guide has the wider schedule. We have not named attendees or predicted any outcome, because none has been published.
Upcoming Sporting Events
No India vs West Indies T20I is scheduled on October 15. Wisden lists the five-match T20I series as October 6 (Lucknow), October 9 (Ranchi), October 11 (Indore), October 14 (Hyderabad) and October 17 (Bengaluru), all at 7:00 PM IST. The fifth match is on Saturday, October 17, two days after the date this article covers. We have not stated the series score, which will change before the 15th.
Other fixtures that appear in secondary listings, including India women's T20Is against Zimbabwe in Raipur from October 16 and the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco from October 17, should be confirmed with the boards and FIFA. India is not listed among the U-17 Women's World Cup teams in the sources we reviewed.
What to Check Before October 15
- Panchang: the tithi for Navratri's fifth day in your city, plus any fasting rules.
- Payments: NPCI's current notice on UPI MDR, and what your merchant app displays.
- Bangkok: the IMF and World Bank pages for time-stamped agendas.
- Cricket: the BCCI for the T20I on October 17.
Frequently Asked Questions
What day of the week is October 15, 2026?
It is a Thursday. We calculated this from the research date of October 8, 2026, plus seven days.
Is October 15 a public holiday in India?
No national public holiday is listed for it in the sources we used. Navratri and observance days do not close banks by themselves; state lists differ, and our October bank holidays guide is the place to check.
Is World Students' Day a United Nations day?
No. The UN's list of international days has no World Students' Day, and the UN's Indian office has said it never made such a declaration. The UN does mark October 15 as the International Day of Rural Women.
Did the Tata flight of 1932 reach Madras the same day?
The Tata account says a second pilot flew the Madras leg from Bombay after the Karachi arrival, with a refuelling stop on the way. We do not give an arrival time for Madras because we did not find one.
Conclusion
October 15, 2026 joins aviation history, a beloved scientist's birthday, a UN observance, a festival and a payments change in one calendar day. Treat the schedule items as plans rather than outcomes and confirm the exact timings on the day.
A good next step is to read the UPI MDR explainer if you handle merchant payments, or the Kalam explainer if you want to separate the facts from the forwards.
