There is a fortnight every year when India looks better than it does at any other time, and almost nobody plans for it properly.
The southwest monsoon finishes withdrawing from the north, west and centre in the first half of October. What it leaves behind is a country that is simultaneously green and dry: full lakes, washed air, hills that have not yet browned off, and none of the December haze that flattens photographs across the Gangetic plain. Then the festival calendar arrives on top of it.
The catch is that October 2026 is not the October most travel guides describe. Diwali is late this year. So is the Pushkar Fair. Kaziranga does not open at all. Below are ten places that genuinely work this month, with the dates to book against — and, at the end, the four that are worth postponing.
Best Places to Visit in India in October 2026: The Shortlist
| # | Destination | Why October 2026 | Best window |
|---|---|---|---|

| 2 | Kolkata, West Bengal | Durga Puja pandal-hopping at full scale | Oct 16–20 |
| 3 | Kashmir Valley | Chinar leaves turn; peak autumn colour | Oct 20–31 |
| 4 | Ranthambore, Rajasthan | Reopens after the monsoon closure | Oct 1 onwards |
| 5 | Kanha & Bandhavgarh, MP | Core zones reopen; forest at its greenest | Oct 16 onwards |
| 6 | Ladakh | Last clear-weather window before winter | Oct 1–20 |
| 7 | Sikkim & Darjeeling | Clearest Kanchenjunga views of the year | All month |
| 8 | Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka | Post-monsoon greenery, coffee estates busy | Oct 10–31 |
| 9 | Hampi, Karnataka | Tungabhadra full, temperatures manageable | All month |
| 10 | Goa | Shoulder-season rates before the Nov rush | Oct 10–31 |
1. Mysuru, Karnataka — Dasara, October 11 to 21
Mysuru does Dasara at a scale nowhere else in India attempts. Mysore Dasara 2026 runs from Sunday, October 11 to Wednesday, October 21, with the Jamboo Savari — the caparisoned elephant procession carrying the golden howdah from the palace to Bannimantap — closing it on October 21.
The detail most first-timers miss: the palace illumination runs every evening through the festival, not just on the final day, and the crowds on the ordinary weeknights are a fraction of what turns up for the procession. If you want the lit palace without the crush, go mid-festival. If you want the Savari, you need a ticketed gallery seat and you need it well in advance.
Daytime temperatures sit in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, which is about as comfortable as an Indian festival city gets.
2. Kolkata, West Bengal — Durga Puja, October 16 to 20
Kolkata during Puja is less a destination than a temporary city built on top of the existing one. Mahalaya falls on Saturday, October 10, opening the countdown; the main pandal days run from Maha Shashthi on Friday, October 16 through Vijaya Dashami on Tuesday, October 20, when the immersions begin at the Hooghly ghats.
A practical note that saves a lot of frustration: the big-ticket pandals in south Kolkata are effectively unreachable by car after dusk. The Metro runs extended hours during Puja and is the only sensible way to cover ground. Start north — Kumartuli, where the idols are made, is at its most interesting in the days *before* Shashthi — and work south.
Some Bengali panchangs place Bijoya Dashami on October 21 rather than the 20th. We covered the full tithi reasoning in our guide to Navratri 2026 dates and the nine-day calendar.
3. Kashmir Valley — Autumn, Late October
Kashmir in October is a different place from Kashmir in June. The chinars in the Mughal gardens, along the Dal and through Pahalgam turn from green to a hard copper-red, typically peaking in the last ten days of the month. It is the valley's quietest good-weather window: the summer families have gone and the ski crowd has not arrived.
Expect daytime highs around 15–20°C in Srinagar and near-freezing nights in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Houseboat rates are at their most negotiable. Naturally, check current travel advisories before booking.
4. Ranthambore, Rajasthan — Reopens October 1
Ranthambore National Park reopens to visitors on October 1, 2026 after four months of monsoon closure, and the first weeks are arguably the best of the whole season to be there — though for the opposite reason to the popular one.
The forest is thick and the grass is high, which does cut sightlines. But the lakes are full, the animals are in good condition, and visitor numbers in the first fortnight are a fraction of what they will be in December and January. Zones 1 to 5, the old core around the fort and the lakes, are the ones worth the extra effort to book.
Safari permits are released online well in advance and the morning slots in popular zones do sell out — treat booking as the first step, not an afterthought.
5. Kanha & Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh — From October 16
Kanha's core zones open on October 16, 2026. Madhya Pradesh staggers its reopenings, so confirm the specific park and zone before you lock flights — buffer zones often open earlier than core.
Kanha in late October is the sal forest at its most photogenic: the maidans still green, mist sitting in the meadows at dawn, barasingha out in numbers. Pair it with Bandhavgarh, three to four hours away, if you have the week. Both are considerably quieter than Ranthambore and the lodges are better value.
6. Ladakh — The Last Clear Window, October 1 to 20
October is Ladakh's closing act, and it is a good one. Skies are at their most transparent, the Indus valley poplars turn gold, and Pangong and Nubra are almost empty.
The trade-offs are real. Nights drop below freezing from early in the month. Many camps and guesthouses towards Pangong and Hunder begin shutting from mid-October. And the overland routes — the Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways — become unreliable towards the end of the month as the high passes take their first snow. Fly into Leh, allow two full days to acclimatise, and plan the trip in the first three weeks rather than the last.
7. Sikkim & Darjeeling — The Clearest Views of the Year
If the reason for the trip is to actually see Kanchenjunga, October and November are the months. The post-monsoon air over the eastern Himalaya is at its cleanest before winter dust and valley inversions set in, and the dawn view from Tiger Hill, Pelling or Lachung has its highest strike rate of the year.
North Sikkim permits for Lachen and Lachung take a day to process and routes through the region can be affected by landslide repair work after the monsoon — check road status with your operator rather than assuming. For a broader set of options at altitude, see our list of the top 10 hill stations in India in 2026.
8. Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka — October 10 Onwards
Coorg spends the monsoon under near-continuous rain and emerges in October looking like the brochure: full streams, Abbey and Iruppu falls at volume, and coffee estates moving into the run-up to harvest. Homestays are the way to do it — the plantation-stay model here is genuinely good and far cheaper than the resorts on the Madikeri road.
Expect residual showers in the first week of the month. From around October 10, the pattern usually settles.
9. Hampi, Karnataka — All Month
Hampi is punishing from March to June and lovely in October. The Tungabhadra runs full after the monsoon, the boulder landscape has a green wash over it that disappears by December, and daytime temperatures come down to something you can actually walk in.
Two full days covers the Vijayanagara ruins properly — the Virupaksha and Vittala temple complexes, the royal enclosure, and the sunset climb up Matanga Hill. The Anegundi side across the river is the quieter half and worth the crossing.
10. Goa — Shoulder Season, October 10 Onwards
Goa in October is the value pick on this list. The monsoon breaks up during the first week or so, the sea calms, the shacks start rebuilding along the north beaches, and rates are still at a fraction of what they become from mid-November.
The compromise is that not everything is open yet — some shacks and beach operators do not trade until late October or early November, and the sea can stay rough for swimming early in the month. In exchange you get Palolem and Agonda almost to yourself.
Four Places to Postpone to November
This is where a lot of October travel lists go wrong for 2026.
| Destination / event | Commonly listed as | Actual 2026 timing |
|---|---|---|
| Diwali celebrations (Varanasi, Jaipur, Amritsar) | October | November 8, with the five-day festival Nov 6–10 |
| Pushkar Camel Fair, Rajasthan | October / early November | November 17–24, climaxing on Kartik Purnima |
| Rann Utsav, Kutch | October | Season opens in November 2026; confirm with Gujarat Tourism |
| Kaziranga National Park, Assam | October | Reopens November 1, 2026 — no October safaris |
The Andaman Islands belong in the same category for a different reason: October sits in the tail of the wet season there, with choppy crossings and frequent ferry cancellations. November onwards is the sensible window.
The Two Long Weekends — and Why They Matter
October 2026 has two natural breaks, and both fall on high-demand travel dates.
| Break | Dates | Leave needed | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gandhi Jayanti weekend | Fri Oct 2 – Sun Oct 4 | None | Ranthambore opening week, Coorg, Hampi |
| Dussehra break | Sat Oct 17 – Tue Oct 20 | 1 day (Mon Oct 19) | Mysuru, Kolkata, Kashmir |
Gandhi Jayanti falls on a Friday this year, so the first weekend is free of charge. Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20 turns a single Monday leave into four days — which is exactly why flights into Kolkata, Bagdogra and Srinagar for that window price up sharply once September ends.
If you are travelling on either of those dates, book transport now and accommodation second. It is almost always the seats that run out first.
Practical Notes for October 2026
Weather, roughly. North and central India: 28–33°C days, pleasant evenings, negligible rain after the first week. Himalaya: clear and cold at night. Western coast: drying out through the first fortnight. Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra: the northeast monsoon arrives around late October, so Chennai, Puducherry and the Coromandel coast are the wet exception this month.
Booking order. Safari permits first (they have hard caps), then flights, then rooms. For Dasara gallery seats and Puja pandal tours, assume a month's lead time.
Packing. Layers for anywhere above 1,500m — October nights swing far colder than the daytime suggests. Mosquito repellent for the plains and the parks; post-monsoon is peak vector season across much of north India.
Festival crowds. Mysuru and Kolkata are worth doing properly or not at all. Half a day of pandal-hopping in Kolkata traffic will leave you with a worse impression of the city than not going.
Planning something shorter from the capital instead? Our older guide to the top 10 places to visit near Delhi covers the weekend-distance options, and the festival food is half the point in October — see our list of the top 10 street foods in India.
Festival and park dates compiled from Mysore Dasara and Durga Puja calendar listings, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh forest department park-opening notices, Gujarat Tourism's Rann Utsav announcements and Indian public-holiday calendars, all checked on September 22, 2026. Frequently Asked Questions
Is October a good time to travel in India?
For most of the country, yes — arguably the best. The monsoon has withdrawn from the north, west and centre, leaving clear air, full rivers and green landscapes before the winter haze. The exceptions are Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh, where the northeast monsoon starts around late October, and the Andamans, which stay unsettled.
When is Mysore Dasara 2026?
October 11 to 21, 2026. The Jamboo Savari elephant procession, which closes the festival, is on Wednesday, October 21.
What are the Durga Puja 2026 dates in Kolkata?
Mahalaya is Saturday, October 10. The main pandal days run from Maha Shashthi on Friday, October 16 to Vijaya Dashami on Tuesday, October 20. Some Bengali panchangs place Bijoya Dashami on October 21.
Which national parks reopen in October 2026?
Ranthambore reopens on October 1 and Kanha's core zones on October 16. Kaziranga does not reopen until November 1, 2026.
Are there long weekends in October 2026?
Two. Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, October 2 gives a free three-day weekend (Oct 2–4). Dussehra on Tuesday, October 20 turns one day of leave into a four-day break (Oct 17–20).
Is Diwali in October 2026?
No. Diwali 2026 is on Sunday, November 8, with the five-day festival running November 6 to 10.
Can I visit Ladakh in October?
Early and mid-October, yes — clear skies and very few visitors. Nights are below freezing and camps near Pangong and Nubra start closing mid-month, so fly into Leh rather than driving the high passes, and aim for the first three weeks.
When does Rann Utsav 2026 start?
In November 2026, running into early March 2027. Announced start dates have differed between sources, so confirm with Gujarat Tourism before booking a tent city package.
Where should I go in India for a short October break?
For the Gandhi Jayanti weekend, Ranthambore in its opening week, Coorg or Hampi all work in three days. For the Dussehra break, Mysuru and Kolkata are the obvious festival choices, with Kashmir the scenic one.
