Every year, the ancient coastal city of Puri in Odisha transforms into the spiritual heart of India. The Jagannath Puri Rath Yatra β the Chariot Festival of Lord Jagannath β draws millions of devotees to witness the divine journey of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra in their magnificent freshly-built wooden chariots.
History and Significance
The Rath Yatra dates back thousands of years. It celebrates Lord Jagannath's annual journey from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple β one of India's four sacred dhams β to his aunt's home at the Gundicha Temple, 3 kilometres away. The three deities travel in their own towering chariots: Jagannath in Nandighosa (45 feet), Balabhadra in Taladhwaja (44 feet), and Subhadra in Darpadalan (43 feet). Each chariot is built fresh every year from sacred wood using traditional techniques.
What Makes Rath Yatra Unique?
- Universal access: Lord Jagannath descends from the inner sanctum (where non-Hindus cannot normally enter) to meet all devotees on the street β regardless of caste, creed, or origin
- The chariot rope: Pulling the chariot rope even once is considered equivalent to one hundred yagnas in Hindu tradition
- Mahaprasad: Food offering distributed to all pilgrims without social distinction
- Global celebration: ISKCON organises Rath Yatras in cities worldwide β London, New York, Sydney
2023 Festival
In 2023, the festival was observed on June 20 β a triumphant return to full public celebration after COVID-19 restrictions. Millions of pilgrims joined the procession along Puri's Grand Road (Bada Danda) in what observers described as one of the most joyful gatherings in recent memory.
How to Participate
- Book accommodation months in advance β Puri fills completely
- Arrive the day before to witness the Pahandi ceremony
- Dress simply and respectfully; keep valuables stored safely
- The crowd can be enormous β stay with your group and maintain awareness
The Rath Yatra carries a message of radical inclusion: the divine stepping out of the temple to meet the people. That message transcends religion β it belongs to all of humanity.
