⚡ Quick Summary
European summer time ends on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 01:00 UTC. In Central Europe clocks move from 3:00 to 2:00; in the UK from 2:00 to 1:00. India does not change its clocks, so the gap with Germany and most of the EU widens from 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes, and the gap with the UK from 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. The EU's plan to end clock changes is still stalled. Research cutoff: October 18, 2026. The change is scheduled, not yet in effect.
If you work with colleagues, clients or family in Europe, the most useful question this weekend is simple: what time will it be there when it is a given time in India? This guide answers it and explains why the clocks still change.
Our October 25, 2026 overview lists the other events on the date. Here we focus on the time change alone.
When Exactly Do the Clocks Change?
Under EU Directive 2000/84/EC, summer time ends at 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of October, according to Wikipedia. The change happens at the same instant everywhere that follows the rule, so local clock times differ by zone.
- Central European Summer Time (CEST) to CET: clocks go back from 3:00 to 2:00 on Sunday, October 25. The Dutch government's page states this directly for the Netherlands.
- United Kingdom: British Summer Time ends the same instant, so clocks go from 2:00 to 1:00, as Universal Time Date reports.
- Other zones: countries using the EU rule move at the same UTC moment, so their local clock hour varies.
The clocks go back one hour, which means everyone gains an extra hour of sleep that night. Phones and computers update themselves, but older wall clocks, ovens and car dashboards may need manual adjustment.
The New Time Gap with India
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year. Because India has no daylight saving time, its gap with Europe changes twice a year. We calculated the figures below from the standard offsets: CEST is UTC+2, CET is UTC+1, BST is UTC+1 and GMT is UTC+0.
| Place | Until Oct 24 | From Oct 25 (after change) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany, France, Italy, Spain | India is 3 h 30 min ahead | India is 4 h 30 min ahead |
| United Kingdom | India is 4 h 30 min ahead | India is 5 h 30 min ahead |
In practice, a 6:00 PM meeting in Frankfurt on Monday, October 26 happens at 10:30 PM in India, not 9:30 PM as last week. A 9:30 AM call in London will fall at 3:00 PM in India, not 2:00 PM.
Practical Tips for Teams
- Check recurring invitations. Calendar apps usually shift them by local time, which can silently move a call by an hour for the side that did not change.
- Confirm webinars and live broadcasts in UTC or in a named city time.
- Remember the United States changes a week later, on November 1, so the India and US gaps move at a different time. Universal Time Date lists the US date.
Why Do the Clocks Still Change?
The Dutch government explains that many European countries introduced summer time to save energy, and that it has been standardised across Europe since 1980. Directive 2000/84/EC now fixes the start and end dates.
Efforts to stop the changes have stalled. According to Sortiraparis and Wikipedia:
- A 2018 Commission consultation drew 4.6 million responses, 84 per cent in favour of ending seasonal changes.
- On March 26, 2019, the European Parliament voted 410 to 192 to end them, leaving each member state to choose permanent summer or winter time.
- The Council of the EU, where governments sit, has not agreed a common position, so the proposal is not law.
- In October 2025, Spain's prime minister proposed scrapping the changes from 2026, and the Commission added the issue to its 2026 work programme, according to Sortiraparis.
Sortiraparis says there is still no majority in the Council and that a quick deal would not change clocks before 2027 or 2028. We could not confirm any firm date, so treat any claim of an imminent end as unconfirmed.
Who Does Not Change Clocks?
Several European countries stay on one time all year. Wikipedia lists Iceland (UTC+0 since 1968), Turkey (UTC+3 since 2016), Belarus and Russia. Their gap with India therefore stays steady, although the gap with the UK and EU shifts.
