Wikipedia's November 6 page is a secondary source, so treat these entries as a starting point.
1217: The Charter of the Forest
Wikipedia says the Charter of the Forest was issued on November 6, 1217, at Old St Paul's Cathedral in London, as a companion to Magna Carta. It was sealed by the young Henry III under the regency of William Marshal. Where Magna Carta addressed the rights of barons, the Charter restored protections to commoners, including common pasture. The same page says it was reissued in 1225, joined with Magna Carta in 1297, and that its last parts were repealed in 1971, making it among the longest-lived English statutes. It is a useful companion to the day's UN theme, which is also about people's relationship with land and forests.
1860: Lincoln is elected
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. The date is a reminder that the US holds elections in early November, and our guide to the 2026 midterms covers the vote held three days before this one. We have seen no results and state none.
1936 and 1943
Wikipedia records that the Spanish republican government left Madrid for Valencia in 1936 during the civil war, and that Soviet forces liberated Kyiv from German occupation in 1943.
Births and deaths
The same page lists Suleiman the Magnificent (born 1494), the saxophone inventor Adolphe Sax (1814), and James Naismith, who invented basketball (1861). It lists the composer Tchaikovsky as dying in 1893, and two Indian names among the deaths: the actor Sanjeev Kumar in 1985 and the chef and author Tarla Dalal in 2013. We have not checked those entries against a second source.
