Quick Summary
Children's Day (Bal Diwas) 2026 is on Saturday, November 14. India marks it on the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister, who was born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj). 2026 is his 137th birth anniversary. It is not a gazetted public holiday. The UN's World Children's Day is a separate observance on November 20. Research cutoff: November 7, 2026.
Every November 14, Indian schools fill with cultural programmes, games and teachers performing for their students instead of the other way round. This is Children's Day, or Bal Diwas, and in 2026 it falls on a Saturday.
The date is tied to Jawaharlal Nehru, whom children called "Chacha Nehru". This guide explains why the day is on November 14, where accounts of its history disagree, how it differs from the UN's Children's Day, and how it is usually celebrated.

Why Children's Day Is on November 14
Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad and served as India's prime minister from August 15, 1947, until his death on May 27, 1964. He was known for his affection for children, who called him Chacha Nehru ("Uncle Nehru"). He also wrote for young readers: Letters from a Father to His Daughter (1929) began as letters to his daughter Indira about the history of the earth and early humans.
After his death, his birthday became firmly established as the day India celebrates children.
The history: accounts differ
The origin of the date is told in two ways, and we have not found an official notification that settles it.
- The widely repeated version. Many Indian news outlets and the Government of India's Vikaspedia portal say India originally marked Children's Day on November 20, in line with the UN's Universal Children's Day, and moved it to November 14 after Nehru died in 1964, to honour his birthday.
- The Wikipedia version. Wikipedia's article on Children's Day in India says the day was first marked as Children's Day on November 14 in 1954, and that a government edict officially declared November 14 Children's Day in 1957, during Nehru's lifetime.
What both versions agree on is the result: since at least 1964, India has celebrated Children's Day on November 14 in Nehru's memory. We present the history as disputed rather than pick one account without a primary source.
A 2018 proposal to change the date
Wikipedia also records that in 2018 a group of BJP MPs asked for Children's Day to move to December 26, with November 14 to be marked as "Chacha Diwas" instead. The date was not changed, and November 14 remains Children's Day.
Children's Day vs World Children's Day
The two are often confused online.
| India's Children's Day | World Children's Day | |
|---|---|---|
| Date | November 14 | November 20 |
| Linked to | Nehru's birthday | UN Convention on the Rights of the Child |
| Who leads it | Schools, families, government in India | United Nations and UNICEF, worldwide |
The UN says World Children's Day on November 20 marks the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the General Assembly adopted in 1989. UNICEF uses the day to campaign for children's rights. Many countries also have their own national children's days on other dates.
How Children's Day Is Celebrated in India
Celebrations are informal and centred on schools, so they vary a lot. Common traditions include:
- School programmes. Assemblies with songs, dances and skits, often with teachers performing for students.
- Fun fairs and games. Many private schools hold fairs, sports and food stalls.
- Fancy dress and drawing contests. Younger children often dress as national figures, including Nehru with his trademark cap and a rose on his jacket.
- Gifts and sweets. Teachers or parents hand out chocolates, books or stationery.
- Children's films. Wikipedia notes that television channels and cinemas often show children's films on the day.
- Holidays in some schools. Wikipedia says some government schools give students the day off. There is no nationwide school holiday, so this depends on the state and the school.
Ideas for parents and teachers
A good Children's Day does not need a large budget. You could read one of Nehru's letters with older children and discuss what they would write to their own family, let children plan an activity themselves, or donate books to a local library or anganwadi. For classroom ideas around learning and literacy, see our International Day of the Girl Child guide.
Nehru's Legacy, Briefly
Nehru led India for nearly 17 years and wrote The Discovery of India (1946), Glimpses of World History and An Autobiography (1936). Institutions named after him include Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya schools. His political record is debated, as any long-serving leader's is; Children's Day itself is a non-partisan celebration of children rather than a judgment on his politics.
