⚡ Quick Summary

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) had threatened an indefinite strike from Monday, October 26, 2026. After a late-night meeting with the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) on September 27, the unions deferred the planned strike action. Upstox reports that the October 26 strike was deferred too, and we found no newer call to strike as of October 19. Deferral is not withdrawal, so check your bank nearer the date. Research cutoff: October 19, 2026.

If you have branch work planned for Monday, October 26, the first question is whether banks will be open. The short answer from what we could verify is that no strike is currently called, but the dispute is not formally settled.

This guide separates what was announced, what was deferred and what is still unknown. We predict nothing.

What UFBU Announced

UFBU had set out a three-phase plan of action. Our earlier report, Bank Strike September 2026, listed a one-day strike on September 11, a three-day strike from September 28 and a threatened indefinite strike from October 26. Business World's headline also reported the plan as strikes of several days followed by indefinite action from October 26. The central demand was a five-day banking week, with all Saturdays as holidays, together with changes to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.

What Happened on September 27

Organiser reports that a meeting between the IBA and UFBU took place at about 9:30 pm on Sunday, September 27. According to Organiser and Outlook India, the two sides agreed to:

  • Set up a joint IBA-UFBU committee to examine the demand for holidays on all Saturdays.
  • Begin discussions on modifying the PLI scheme for Scale IV and above officers.
  • Discuss other pending issues from the minutes of the March 8, 2024 meeting.

Outlook India stresses that the agreement "does not mean that a five-day banking week has been approved." Organiser adds that the understanding does not amount to a final settlement of all issues.

Is the October 26 Strike Still On?

Sources differ in emphasis, so we quote them carefully.

How reports describe the October 26 action
SourceWhat it says about October 26
UpstoxThe proposed indefinite strike from October 26 "has also been deferred"
The WeekUFBU "has warned of an indefinite strike from October 26, 2026, if its demands are not addressed"
OrganiserUFBU would "defer the planned protest programmes and strike action"; October 26 not named
Outlook IndiaDeferral of September 28 to 30; October 26 not mentioned

Reading these together, the September 28 to 30 strike was definitely deferred, and Upstox reports the same for October 26. The Week describes it as a conditional warning. Upstox also quotes the UFBU saying that deferral was not an abandonment of its demands. We found no announcement dated after September 28 that revives or cancels the October 26 date, and no date for the committee's first meeting.

What a Strike Would Affect

The earlier strike coverage on this site noted that public sector banks, some older private banks and regional rural banks are the most exposed, and that digital channels such as UPI, ATMs and net banking continued to run. That describes the September plan, not a confirmed October 26 action, so treat it as background rather than a forecast.

Holidays Around October 26

October 26 is also Valmiki Jayanti, which is a restricted holiday for Central Government offices. Bank holidays follow separate, regional lists, as our October bank holidays guide explains. Our Valmiki Jayanti guide covers the festival itself.

What to Check Before Visiting a Branch

  • Your bank's website, app or SMS notices, which usually announce closures and strike advisories.
  • News from UFBU and IBA after the joint committee begins work.
  • The RBI and your bank's list of regional holidays for the 26th.
  • Whether your task can be done on UPI, net banking or an ATM instead.
  • Time-sensitive payments such as cheque clearance or deadlines, which are worth completing before the 26th.
